Archival management and governance from the perspective of the Records Continuum model

Abstract

The work presented here aims to analyze the possibility of using the Records Continuum conceptual model in the processes of Archival Management and Archival Governance. The methodology used is based on the review of the concepts of the three themes, followed by the establishment of the relationship between these themes through conceptual associations, identifying similarities and differences in hypothetical situations. A brief history of the development of the Records Continuum is presented, including the creation of the Series System in 1960 by Peter Scott, the practice of Australian Recordkeeping and the publication by Jay Atherton in the 1980s that brought the concept of the continuum to Archival Science. The functions of the dimensions and axes of the Records Continuum model are briefly presented, as well as some analyses by authors in Archival Science. The proposed theme is studied in a theoretical manner with the presentation of a hypothetical situation in which the concepts presented on both subjects are related and used as an example. As a theoretical experiment, the paper concludes that it is possible to apply the Records Continuum model in practice as an auxiliary instrument for Archival Management processes as well as for the development of Archival Governance. However, the conclusion also highlights the importance of this exercise being applied in practice for a more accurate verification of the results.

Vinícius Francisco Alves, Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais

Possui graduação em Biblioteconomia pela Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais (2010), graduação em Arquivologia pela Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais (2016) e mestrado em Ciências da Informação pela Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais (2020). Atualmente é Doutorando em Ciências da Informação pela Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais e é arquivista do Instituto Federal Minas Gerais. Tem experiência na área de Ciência da Informação, com ênfase em Arquivologia, atuando principalmente nos seguintes temas: mapeamento de processos, sistemas normativos e plano de classificação funcional. (Texto informado pelo autor)

Cintia Aparecida Chagas, Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais

Doutora em Ciência da Informação (2016), com com realização de estágio pós-doutoral na Universidad de Salamanca (2019), mestre em Administração Pública pela Fundação João Pinheiro (2002), graduada em História pela Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais (1997). Atualmente é professora adjunta da Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais e foi coordenadora do Programa de Pós-Graduação em Ciência da Informação dessa mesma universidade (2021-2023). Líder do grupo de pesquisa Políticas e Gestão de Documentos e Arquivos. Tem experiência na área de Arquivologia, atuando principalmente nos seguintes temas: arquivologia, gestão de documentos, gestão de documentos arquivísticos digitais, avaliação de documentos arquivísticos e reestruturação curricular.
