Abstract

This is a report of professional and academic experience developed in London through volunteer work in archival projects and the master´s degree in Archives and Records Management at University College London (UCL). The aim of the paper is to present the relationship of volunteering with archival institutions in the United Kingdom, and to describe the two projects with which the volunteer experience was developed: Kingsmead Housing Estate and The Sir Joseph Banks Archive. It also aims to briefly reconstruct the emergence of archival courses in the United Kingdom from 1947 onwards and to describe the master’s degree in Archives and Records Management and its disciplines and activities. It is concluded that volunteer archival work in the United Kingdom is extensively used and promoted by several archival and cultural institutions, including the National Archives and the Association of Archivists of the United Kingdom and Ireland (ARA), and it is recognized as a professional experience. In addition, the paper demonstrates the difference between the archival education in the United Kingdom compared to Brazil, which is obtained by taking a postgraduate course.
